Free Civilization clone now available on Wii U in the form of Freeciv

Updated on January 6, 2016

What is Freeciv?

Freeciv is a heavily customizable, turn based strategy game based off of Civilization II. For those of you unfamiliar with the Civilization series this may still be worth a look. This is not a game to love for it's appearance or graphic. Instead the game is an in depth, fantastic and lovable piece of work. It is a strategy game where you start out thousands of years ago as a small tribe. Over time you make technological advancements, you fight wars and you grow as fast as possible into the modern era. You can choose one of hundreds of civilizations, cultures or nations, or even customize your own. You start the game as a settler and before you know it, you are advancing through the ages, discovering secrets of technology and fighting wars.

So, it's on the Wii U huh?

Freeciv is a free to play game that has been around for a long time, and now thanks to updates made to it's HTML5 capabilities, it is playable in the web browser of the Wii U. That includes on the gamepad and TV. This includes online multiplayer (yes you can war with your friends)and touch screen controls. It takes a few minutes to get used to the control scheme, but it works well. It also includes multiplayer cross platform with those playing on a PC browser. There are Scenarios, an entire wiki and a whole community to join not to mention numerous different ways to join and create custom games.

Enter your Name, Leader

The game begins with a request to enter your name. Keep in mind that this will be the name of your leader throughout history.

Customize and choose a Nation/ Culture

You can then choose a nation or culture to lead. This is very important and each one has their strengths and weaknesses. More information on this is available in the Wiki.

Build Your First City

The control scheme can be utilized in many ways. The first thing you need to do is grab your settler and build your first city. Make sure you settle in an appropriate area. Depending on what culture you choose, you will start with different units. If you get a worker, get to work on improving the land and using the resources around you.

This game is extremely complex and every move counts. Build buildings and units in your cities and expand as you see fit. Will you declare war on every neighbor you come across? WIll you be peaceful and trade with neighbors? Or will you excel in science and technology. The world is your oyster. Go and conquer it.

Build.....Build.....Build....War....Watch out for Ghandi

If you enjoy this game, please feel free to donate to the developers as it is a free project for everyone to enjoy.

Developer?

If you are a game developer and wish to contribute to this community and improve the game in any way, the free civ community is open to such contributions. Feel free to get in contact with the community per the link below. This community is a wonderful thing and provides us all with a version of the game civilization without paying a penny.
